Aluminum vs. Fiberglass Truck Cap: What Nobody Tells You Until You've Owned Both
Yes, we sell aluminum caps. No, that doesn't make fiberglass junk. Here's the trailhead version, with the parts the brochures skip.
The only question that matters
What's going on top?
Nothing but dry tools: plenty of options work. A rooftop tent, two people and a dog: most fiberglass shells were never built for that. You'd be trusting a few tracks bonded to fiberglass.
Aluminum caps exist for that job. Ours run dual full-length T-slot rails, rated 450 lbs moving / 850 lbs parked.

Where fiberglass wins
Quieter. Fiberglass has some give. An aluminum cap with loose bins on washboard will let you know. Strap your gear down or run drawers.
Color-matched. Paint-matched fiberglass disappears into the truck. Aluminum is matte black and looks like what it is.
Damage. A rock cracks fiberglass or dings aluminum. A crack is a body-shop conversation. A ding is a ding.
Where aluminum wins
No rust. 6000-series aluminum doesn't care about road salt or coastal air. Fiberglass shells rust at the steel hardware first.
Trail abuse. Branches and overhanging rock scratch gelcoat and it looks tired after a season. A scratch on matte black is just a scratch.
Gull-wing doors. Both sides open on gas struts. Camp kitchen on one side, recovery gear on the other, no crawling in from the tailgate. Go back to a single rear hatch after this and it feels like a flip phone.
No drilling. Clamps to the bed rails. Sell the truck, pull the cap, the bed looks stock.
Interior rails. Side walls come pre-drilled for drawers and shelves. No cutting.
The honest downsides of aluminum
Heavy. About 175 lbs. Two people lift it, one does not.
Ships freight. LTL on a pallet, not UPS. You'll want a friend and a flat driveway. It comes as a 6-piece flat pack: an hour or two to assemble, 30 minutes to clamp on.
Louder empty. Strap your stuff down.
Condensation. Any hard shell sweats if you sleep in it cold. Crack a window. That's why we build both solid-side and side-window versions. Sleeping in the bed: windows. Locked tool box: solid.

Two numbers people mix up
- Dynamic (moving): what the roof carries on the highway. The smaller number. Your crossbars and tent live under it.
- Static (parked): what it holds sitting still. You, your partner, the dog, the tent.
Ours: 450 dynamic / 850 static. A two-person tent runs 120–170 lbs. Add crossbars, awning, solar, recovery boards, and it stacks up fast. Leave margin.
So which one?
Truck lives on pavement and you want it to look stock: fiberglass, paint-matched, done.
Truck actually goes places, tent going on top, tired of rust, want to reach your gear from the side: aluminum.
