I love how it looks on my truck! I went back and forth with customer service trying to address the issues I’ve read about in the reviews on this cap. I asked specifically about the fitment on the tail gate and they responded saying, “We’ve addressed the clearance issue mentioned in older reviews. Our current design has been updated with a 0.5cm forward adjustment, which fully resolves the interference with the tailgate trim. You won’t need to remove any trim or perform any workarounds”. Unfortunately, the “updated” design still doesn’t fit right. After following the instructions to install the cover, I couldn’t close both the cap’s door and the tailgate.
I resolved this issue by removing the weather strip under the glass window. That almost worked. I also had to add shims throughout the surface the bed cap sits on. I readjusted the clamps to fit accordingly, but it makes me nervous.
Secondly, there were no instructions on the wiring part of the install. The 3rd gen Tacoma’s tail light assembly is different than the 4th gen tail light assembly. The 4th gen has a combined blinker and brake wire, so I had to wire the bed cap’s brake light with it. Currently the light flashes when I turn my blinker on, but works functionally as a brake light when I hit the pedal. As of now, I had to purchase a special wiring kit from another company that taps into the combined wire behind the tail lights on either side of the truck. Not entirely TKM’s fault, but the instructions/website didn’t make this problem apparent. Had to do a lot of personal research and had a difficult time finding online resources.
The clamp design is a little wonky. It is challenging to get the clamps to sit in the correct position before tightening them down. The instructions said to use 4 clamps on each side of my bed rails (adding to 8 total) but the bed cap only came with 6 clamps in total, leaving only 3 clamps on each side. Shouldn’t be a huge deal, they seem tight.
Other than those issues, the bed cap is nice. I like the functionality of the doors on the sides. Can’t wait to reverse into a spot and open it up on the coast, or even potentially use it to sleep in my truck bed in the mountains!
Wanted to provide some transparent, detailed insight for the next guy that comes across this bed cap. I hope this helps!
